Bad Blood 滅門 (2010)

Fatal MoveBad Blood! With Law also in writing and producing capacities, the 2010 movie retains many of the main cast of Fatal Move including Simon Yam, Eddie Cheung, Pinky Cheung, and Lam Suet, and sees the return of cinematographer Herman Yau and action choreographer Li Chung Chi. Action favorites Andy On, Xiong Xinxin, Ken Lo, and martial arts starlet Jiang Luxia are onboard the violent actioner, as are TVB stars Bernice Liu and Chris Lai. Veteran actors Chan Wai Man, Amy Chum, and Wong Tin Lam round out the ensemble cast of the gangster whodunit about the bloody infighting within a triad clan.

Crime lord Lok Cheung On (Eddie Cheung) runs a smuggling ring in Hong Kong. He gets caught during a failed counterfeit money operation in Mainland China and is executed. After he's gone, a deadly struggle for power breaks out within the gang, with a series of murders and assassinations aimed at members of the Lok clan. One by one, the various sons and daughters, wives and mistresses, brothers and cousins fall as they turn on each other in paranoia. The overbearing Simon Yam, the seemingly benign Bernice Liu, the crippled Andy On, the gentle Chris Lai, or the mysterious dumb girl Jiang Luxia - any of them could be the mastermind behind all the ruthless killings - or his/her next victim.
director Dennis Law deals out another powerful blow in his latest triad-themed offering

Rebellion 同门 2009

Prolific Hong Kong director Herman Yau strikes again with the 2009 triad actioner Rebellion. Shawn Yue (Shamo) stands in the center of a burgeoning turf war in this heady gangland drama that plays out over one very eventful night in the streets of Hong Kong. Yue plays a reluctant gangster who is suddenly promoted to the top of the pecking order after his boss gets shot, and infighting breaks out in the syndicate. Delivering both a witty script and impressive action scenes, Herman Yau offers a fresh variation to the gangster genre with his distinctive characters and satirical portrayal of triad politics. Rebellion's colorful lineup of gangsters and moles is essayed by the equally varied cast of television star Ada Choi, idols Elanne Kong (Happy Funeral) and Ella Koon (Look for a Star), Chapman To (Infernal Affairs), Conroy Chan ( Lady Cop & Papa Crook), Anson Leung (One Nite in Mongkok), and rockers Paul Wong and Jun Kung (Time and Tide). Eastern Kowloon is a festering hotbed of crime and vice watched over by a coalition of five triad bosses who nominally get along. When boss Jimmy (Calvin Poon) gets gunned down in the streets, however, the wheels of war begin to spin. Away in Taiwan, Jimmy's wife Cheung Wah (Ada Choi) passes temporary leadership to their trusted bodyguard Po (Shawn Yue) over disgruntled #2 man Blackie (Chapman To). Po has to find the gunman and keep things under control until Cheung Wah returns to Hong Kong the next day. But in the meantime, Blackie, the other four leaders, and the police are all making moves of their own.

At the end of the Qing Dynasty, war hero Su Can leads a spectacularly daring raid on enemy forces before retiring home from his military life to his beloved wife and their newborn son. Six years later, his vengeful step-brother Yuang returns from war unrecognizably consumed by Dark Martial Arts and armed with his Five Venom Fist, which he wields to severely injure Su as payback for a long and dark family history. Bodyguards and Assassins : 十月围城 (2009)

Hong Kong films don't come much bigger than this. Directed by Teddy Chan and co-produced by Peter Chan, the highly anticipated blockbuster Bodyguards and Assassins brings together an awe-inspiring all-star cast for a thrilling retelling of a brief but significant moment in modern Chinese history. Inspired by true events, Bodyguards and Assassins revolves around Sun Yat-sen's visit to Hong Kong in 1906, and the brave bodyguards who protect him from an assassination attempt. Donnie Yen, Leon Lai, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Nicholas Tse, Golden Horse Best Supporting Actor Wang Xueqi, Taiwan actor Wang Bo Chieh (Winds of September), NBA basketball player Mengke Bateer, and pop idol Chris Lee portray eight heroes from different walks of life who rise to the occasion in Hong Kong's finest hour. Hu Jun plays the leader of the Qing assassins, while Eric Tsang, Simon Yam, and Fan Bingbing take supporting roles. Zhang Hanyu, Jacky Cheung, and Michelle Reis also make key cameo appearances.

Hong Kong, 1906. Exiled Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-sen is returning to the British colony to meet with alliance leaders about upcoming plans to insurrect against the Qing imperial government. As the news spreads, both the Qing court and the revolutionaries spring into action. In China, the Qing send out official Xiao Guo (Hu Jun) to spearhead Sun's assassination; in Hong Kong, activist Xiao Bai (Tony Leung) and businessman Li (Wang Xueqi) gather bodyguards to protect Sun. Though pulled into the conflict for very different reasons, crooked cop Chung Yang (Donnie Yen), rickshaw driver Ah Shi (Nic Tse), beggar Lau (Leon Lai), Shaolin monk Stinky Tofu (Mengke Bateer), revolutionary's daughter Hung (Chris Lee), and Li's son Chung Guang (Wang Bo Chieh) all lay down their lives for a common cause: to protect Sun during the fateful hour he's in Hong Kong.

While the first half of Bodyguards and Assassins sets up the revolutionary cause, the action-packed second half rolls out the brutal confrontation between the bodyguards and the assassins. The rickshaw must keep moving, no matter the cost, as the Tung Wai-choreographed action and chase scenes play out in almost real time through a massive set that stunningly recreates early 1900s Hong Kong Central District.

Confucius 孔子 (2010)

The great sage and philosopher Confucius lived in the 6th century B.C., at a time when China was still a patchwork of feudal states vying with each other for supremacy. The Zhou Dynasty was tottering, incapable of unifying the various kingdoms, and there were incessant local wars over land and power. Confucius was born in the kingdom of Lu and rose to serve in its government. His skillfully engineered a peace with aggressive neighboring states and brought three dominant local clans under control. But his brilliance as a thinker and tactician was not enough to save him from being exiled by his political enemies, and he spent many years wandering and teaching a band of loyal disciples. His followers transcribed his lectures, collected as The Analects of Confucius, a volume which has been in print for well over 200 years.

The man we know as Confucius (a Latinized version of Kong Fuzi – “Venerable Master Kong”) was born Kong Qiu in 551 B.C., the son of a declining aristocrat in the kingdom of Lu. His early life was frugal. The world around him was collapsing, and he had radical, innovative ideas for reforming and stabilizing it. Enjoying the confidence of the ruler of Lu, he is promoted from Mayor of Zhongdu to Minister of Rituals in the court and begins to apply his principle of civility in everything from diplomatic relations with warlike neighboring kingdoms to domestic relations within the family. After a series of diplomatic triumphs he is promoted again to become Interior Minister. His ambitious plan to curb the power of Lu’s three dominant clans succeeds at first, and he is equally triumphant in outwitting the renegade general who leads an army against the Lu court. But the head of Qi clan seduces the ruler of Lu with gold, horses and women and persuades him to send Confucius into exile. Stripped of his official title, the sage sorrowfully leaves his wife and children behind and embarks on a new life as a wanderer. He is surprised and moved when members of his loyal retinue opt to join him in his travels.

Their life as wanderers is not easy. Confucius withstands both temptations and hardships, and is more than once forced to flee when another local war breaks out. Eventually, many years later, he is invited back to Lu, once again threatened by a political coup. But he agrees to return only as a teacher, refusing to involve himself in politics, and spends his declining years studying and collating the classics. History records that he died a disappointed man, but his work outlived the “Spring and Autumn Period” in which he lived and echoed through the dynasties to become the very bedrock of Chinese civilization. This film tells the story of the turbulent life and stirring times of the greatest sage and teacher ever known.
